Rivers Bridge State Historic Site now offers Tours of Battlefield
Ehrhardt – On Feb. 2-3, 1865, 1,200 Confederate soldiers made a stand at Rivers Bridge on the Salkehatchie River against Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman’s sweep across South Carolina during the final months of the Civil War. Behind stout earthen fortifications, the Southerners fought a division of about 5,000 Union soldiers. Union troops crossed the swollen swamp on both ends of the Confederate line to finally win the battle. Today, Rivers Bridge SHS, as the only South Carolina State Historic Site commemorating the Civil War, preserves the battlefield and its fortifications.
Beginning in May 2011, Rivers Bridge SHS will offer a guided tour of the battlefield the first Saturday of each month at 2:00 p.m. Visitors will meet at the park community building prior to the tour for demonstrations of Civil War equipment, stories of how the battle effected the lives of the men who fought there and revelations of how the results of the battle changed the history of South Carolina. The tour will then examine the still intact fortifications as well as the natural topography that lead one Union general to call Rivers Bridge "… the strongest position I ever saw in my life."
The first guided tour of the Rivers Bridge battlefield will be on May7 at 2:00 p.m. All visitors should meet at the community building. Rivers Bridge SHS no long charges admission to the park but there is a fee for the tour of $5 for each adult, and $3 for each student (ages 6-16). Rivers Bridge SHS is located near Ehrhardt, SC. For more information, visit www.SouthCarolinaParks.com or call the park at (803) 267-3675.
Barnwell State Park is now a geo-caching site.
Geo-caching is a techno-sport using global positioning satellites (GPS) and hand-held systems to locate specific “finds” in state, local and national parks and forests. Currently, the park has 3 caches the Turkey Feather Trail, Barnwell State Park-Upper Lake and Springs, and Water Source for Farm Animals.
The Sandhills region of the South Carolina State Park Service is working on a region wide geo-caching challenge. Inside 13 caches will be part of a clue for the final cache. Once the last cache is found, the geo-cacher will receive a prize. Before any caches are placed in any State Park the placement site must be approved by the park manager. For more information about geo-caching in South Carolina contact Bryn Harmer from Lee State Park at 803-428-5307 between 11 am – 12 pm or email: email@example.com.
