Upcoming Event
Event Name: Aiken Chamber Music Series: Augusta Virtuosi
Event Occurs: Once
Event Description: St. Mary Help of Christians Church, Parish Musician Frank Deese, and Artist-in-Residence Adam DePriest are proud to be a part of the Aiken Chamber Music Series and host a free, socially-distant musical event that promises to be a delightful breath of fresh air for the community during a very difficult time for all. Members of Augusta Virtuosi will perform Antonin Dvorak's "American" String Quartet from the steps of the church at 7pm on Saturday, November 14, 2020.
This composition easily qualifies as one of the most quintessential examples of the string quartet genre. Dvorak's trips to the New World helped to inspire a rich, American musical language and tradition for future composers. This quartet was composed while he was on vacation in Iowa from his position as director of the National Conservatory in New York City. One can easily hear influences of his Symphony No. 9 "From the New World" that was composed shortly beforehand.
The performance will last about 30 minutes. Audience members are encouraged to bring their own chairs. Donations go to support future chamber music events.
