Event Description: | Aiken Civic Orchestra's first concert in the Classical Series will feature Rachel Barton Pine on violin for Max Bruch's "Scottish Fantasy", Opus 46. Hailed as a leading interpreter of the great classical masterworks and a winner of numerous awards including Gold and Bronze Medals in International Violin Competitions, Ms. Pine is a past winner of the Studs Terkel Humanities Service Award. The Washington Post says Ms. Pine is "an exciting, boundary-defying performer - Pine displays a power and confidence that puts her in the top echelon." She has performed internationally and has recorded as well, with a discography of over 40 recordings including Elgar and Bruch Violin Concertos. The concert also features the very popular Hebrides Overture "Fingal's Cave" and Symphony No. 3, (the "Scottish" Symphony in A Minor) by Felix Mendelssohn. Mendelssohn is one of the most popular and important composers of the Romantic era, and these works are often described as evoking the wild landscapes of Scotland. |
